Boston in 1903 was a city of roughly half a million people, and in October the Boston Americans met the Pittsburgh Pirates in a best-of-nine championship series, with home games at the Huntington Avenue Grounds. The Americans won it five games to three, a result that gave the city a fresh reason to see itself as a national contender. Earlier that year, Isabella Stewart Gardner had opened her Venetian-style palace on the Fenway to the public, adding a new cultural landmark beside the growing western districts. Meanwhile, shoe, leather, and clothing firms still employed many working families in the older neighborhoods, and wharves and rail yards kept goods moving through the port.
