East Boston, the part of Boston across the harbor from the downtown wharves, was in 1894 a busy waterfront district of shipyards, iron works, and sugar refining, and it had been part of the city since 1836. Its piers and docks handled steamships and cargo for the port, and many of its residents were workers who came from Ireland, Italy, and other parts of Europe to take jobs on the docks and in the factories. Ferries carried people and goods between East Boston and the North End, and the district was linked to the rest of the city by the harbor traffic that gave Boston its identity as a shipping center. For residents, the view across the water was of a working harbor where ships, smokestacks, and the rows of wooden houses on the hillside defined daily life.
