Boston in 1894 was a city of about 450,000 people that had grown well past its old peninsula. Roxbury, Dorchester, and West Roxbury had been annexed in the 1860s and 1870s, and the western districts of the city were filling with brick houses, churches, and streetcar lines. Back Bay, built on filled tidal flats over the preceding decades, had become a fashionable residential district, while the Back Bay railyards and the wholesale trade along the waterfront kept the older commercial core busy. Shoe and leather manufacturing, printing, and the textile and clothing trades drew workers from Ireland, Italy, and Canada, and their neighborhoods shaped the city's politics and parish life. Residents would have known the city as a center of publishing, learning, and reform, and as a place still rebuilding its downtown after the Great Fire of 1872.
