Boston's Public Garden in 1904 sat at the foot of Beacon Street, within sight of the State House on Beacon Hill, and the city then held about 560,000 people. Its paths carried streams of office clerks, shoppers, and families, while electric streetcars of the Boston Elevated Railway, formed in 1897, ran along the streets bordering the park. Gardeners kept seasonal flower beds in bloom, and the Ether Monument, dedicated in 1868, stood among the trees as a reminder of the medical discoveries made in the city. Many residents of the North End and South End, crowded into tenements, came here on weekends for the open air that the park offered.
