Franklin Park, in the Roxbury and Dorchester section of Boston, was in 1904 one of the city's largest public parks, a centerpiece of the Emerald Necklace that Frederick Law Olmsted and Charles Eliot designed in the 1880s. Boston had grown past half a million residents by the turn of the century, and its dense tenements and factories made large green spaces like this one a civic priority. Streetcar lines, which the Boston Elevated Railway had consolidated in 1897, carried families from the crowded neighborhoods to the park's open meadows, woods, and winding drives on weekends and holidays. For Bostonians of the day, the park stood as a place to escape the noise and smoke of the city while still being within easy reach of home.
