In 1912 Boston Harbor was a working port of wool, fruit, and leather, with United Fruit steamers loading bananas at the city's wharves and wool merchants handling much of the country's raw fleece. The 1910 census counted about 670,000 people in Boston proper, and the harbor anchored a metropolitan area that spilled into Chelsea, Everett, and Quincy. Electric streetcars carried workers from crowded tenement districts to waterfront warehouses, while the Navy Yard at Charlestown kept naval vessels in view of the water. That April, newspapers across the city were filled with the sinking of the Titanic, and by autumn residents were following the Red Sox, who had opened Fenway Park earlier that year.
