Boston Harbor in 1876 was the working front door of a city still rebuilding from the Great Boston Fire of 1872, which had destroyed much of the downtown financial district. Its wharves handled coastal and transatlantic freight, and the harbor's islands, ferries, and steamers linked the city to Cape Cod, the Maine coast, and points south. Shoemaking, leather, clothing, and sugar refining drove the local economy, and the city's population had passed 300,000. Residents in the Centennial year would have known the harbor as the place where ships, rail freight, and the growing industrial city met, with the country's hundredth birthday being marked across the region.
