Boston in 1919 was still recovering from the influenza epidemic of the previous autumn and from the strain of wartime production that had kept its mills and shipyards running. In January a storage tank of molasses burst in the North End, sending a wave through the streets near the waterfront and killing more than 20 people, a disaster the neighborhood's families would long remember. In September the city's police officers walked off the job, and the streets were left thinly guarded until Governor Calvin Coolidge called out the state militia and the strike collapsed. Residents who crossed the Common that year would have known a city where public order itself had recently been tested.
