Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1903 was a leafy suburb of Boston whose residents commuted into the city by streetcar, and Beacon Street was one of the main routes linking the two. The town had grown quickly since the 1870s, when horsecars and later electric trolleys made it practical to live on large lots and travel to downtown offices each day. Brookline's population had passed 19,000 by 1900, and its prosperous households, many of them Boston merchants, lawyers, and professionals, supported schools, churches, and a town government that prized open space. Frederick Law Olmsted, whose office was based in town, had helped shape the parks and tree-lined streets that drew these families, and the view of Beacon Street would have looked familiar to anyone who rode the trolleys through it.
