Andover, Massachusetts, in 1903 was a town of schools, churches, and mill villages set along the Shawsheen River and the rail lines north of Boston. Phillips Academy, founded in 1778, and Abbot Academy for girls drew students from across the country, and the Andover Theological Seminary, a Congregational institution, gave the town a reputation as a center of learning. Its factory districts, such as the woolen and paper works along the river, employed local families while the much larger textile city of Lawrence sat a few miles away on the Merrimack. Residents of the period would have known Andover first for its academies and its quiet, orderly village streets, with the mills working at the edge of town.
