Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, stood in 1903 as one of the oldest boarding schools in the country, founded in 1778 under the will of Samuel Phillips. Its students came largely from prosperous New England families and lived in dormitories on a campus of brick halls and open lawns. Andover itself was a quiet town of farms, churches, and academic life, while the textile mills of Lawrence and Lowell along the Merrimack River gave the wider region its industrial energy. Abbot Academy, a school for girls, also operated in town, so its streets carried the routines of two separate schools. For local residents, the campus was a source of civic pride and steady work.
