Bradford Academy, pictured in 1903, stood in the Bradford section of Haverhill, on the north bank of the Merrimack River in the northeastern corner of Massachusetts. Bradford had been annexed to Haverhill in 1897, so the school sat within a city whose economy rested largely on shoe manufacturing, with factories and workers' tenements crowding the river. The academy had long served as a school for young women, and its students, faculty, and families were tied to the town's churches, its lecture halls, and its social calendar. Most residents of the area knew the campus as a respected local school set apart from the noise of the mills, even as the industrial growth below it reshaped daily life.
