Ashburnham, a hill town in north Worcester County, Massachusetts, was in 1903 a place shaped by its academy and its granite quarries, with Cushing Academy at the center of village life. The school had opened in 1865 as a private coeducational boarding academy, drawing students from across New England, and by the turn of the century it was one of the better-known preparatory schools in the state. Nearby Fitchburg and Gardner, both reachable by rail, supplied much of the region's wage work in paper, machinery and furniture, while Ashburnham's farms and quarries supported a smaller population. Residents would have known the town first for the academy's buildings and its commencement exercises, which drew families and visitors up the hill each June.
