Corey Hill, in Brookline, Massachusetts, was in 1903 a residential rise on the edge of Boston, part of a town that had grown into a commuting suburb. Trolley lines and the railroad let professionals and merchants live in Brookline and work in the city, and the town's large house lots and tree-lined streets reflected that trade. Brookline was governed by an annual town meeting rather than a city council, and its residents took pride in the town's parks and open spaces, many of them shaped by the landscape firm of Frederick Law Olmsted, whose office was based in the town. For the families living on and around Corey Hill, the view across the rooftops and wooded slopes was a sign of a suburb that kept its open character while staying close to Boston.
