Dewey Square sat at the edge of Boston's downtown in 1903, where the railroad yards and waterfront wharves met the city's commercial streets. South Station, which opened in 1899, had made the area a major gateway for rail travelers arriving from New England and beyond, and the streets around it carried heavy freight wagons, streetcars, and commuters. The city had more than half a million residents, and its economy rested on shipping, wholesale trade, shoe and clothing manufacturing, and insurance and finance. The square itself was named for Admiral George Dewey, whose victory at Manila Bay in 1898 had made him a national hero, so the name carried patriotic meaning for Bostonians only a few years after the Spanish-American War.
