North Adams in 1921 was a mill city of roughly 22,000 people, still working through the sharp postwar slump that hit New England manufacturing in 1920 and 1921. Cotton and woolen mills, which had drawn French Canadian, Irish, and Italian families to the valley for decades, cut hours and laid off workers as orders dried up. Downtown merchants on Main Street depended on those paychecks, so a slow month at the mills meant empty shelves and fewer customers across the city. Many families kept gardens, took in boarders, and watched the Hoosac River and the mountains above the town as they weighed whether to stay or move on.
