In 1921, Plymouth, Massachusetts, was a small harbor town that still lived in the shadow of its 1620 Pilgrim founding, and the Pilgrim Tercentenary of 1920 had only just drawn national attention to it. Its working economy rested on manufacturing, most visibly the Plymouth Cordage Company, whose rope works employed a large share of local families. That year President Warren G. Harding, who had taken office in March, came to the town during his travels, and his appearance drew crowds of residents eager to see the head of the government in a place many Americans regarded as the birthplace of New England. Local people of the period would have known Plymouth first for its Rock and its Pilgrim heritage, and second for the cordage mills that paid the wages.
