Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1921 was a small seacoast town that still drew much of its identity from the 1620 landing of the Pilgrims, and that story brought visitors to the harbor and to Plymouth Rock during the tercentenary years. President Warren G. Harding's address there marked one of the larger public occasions the town hosted in that period. Its working economy rested on more practical foundations. The Plymouth Cordage Company, a major rope works, employed many local men and women, while cranberry bogs and fishing kept the surrounding shore busy. Residents knew the town as the place where the colony began, but they also lived in a community whose mills and harbor depended on a New England economy that was then struggling through the sharp postwar slump of 1920 and 1921.
