Plymouth in 1921 was caught in the sharp postwar slump that hit New England's industries in 1920 and 1921, when prices fell and orders thinned. Fewer vessels tied up at the town wharves than in the years before the First World War, so men who depended on the harbor looked for work in the cranberry bogs, on the summer hotel staffs, or in the mills that still ran. Civic life stayed closely tied to the 1620 landing, which the Pilgrim Society and local schools kept before residents and visitors each season. For most people in town, Plymouth was a place where a working present and an old founding story sat side by side.
