Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1910 was a town that lived with its founding story at the center of civic life, even as its economy had moved well beyond the Pilgrim past. The harbor and waterfront still handled fishing and coastal trade, while cranberry bogs in the surrounding pine barrens and the cordage and wire works along the water supported working families. The Old Colony Railroad line, which connected the town to Boston and Cape Cod, brought summer visitors and day-trippers to see Plymouth Rock, which by then sat under the granite canopy erected in 1920 only in later years, so the rock itself was still an open landmark drawing crowds. Residents would have known the town chiefly as the site of the 1620 landing and as a stop on the route between Boston and the Cape.
