Radcliffe College, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was in 1910 the women's college that stood beside Harvard, which had admitted women to its lectures only through the Harvard Annex until the institution took the Radcliffe name in 1894. Its students sat in Harvard classrooms taught by Harvard faculty, and their degrees carried Radcliffe's name, a arrangement that drew both praise and skepticism from the wider academic world. Cambridge itself was then a city of more than 100,000 people, with factories, printing houses, and rail and streetcar lines linking it to Boston across the Charles River. For the families who lived in the surrounding neighborhoods, the college campus was a source of local pride and a steady presence in daily life, shaped by the same university that dominated the city's reputation.
