In 1910 the Harvard campus sat in a Cambridge that still measured its past by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, whose house on Brattle Street drew visitors who wanted to see where the poet had lived and written. Radcliffe College, which grew out of the Harvard Annex for women founded in 1879 and took its own name in 1894, offered women a place to study alongside Harvard's instruction. City government met in its own building on Massachusetts Avenue, where officials oversaw streets, schools and water for a population that had grown sharply since 1880. Across the decade, the yard and its neighborhoods were changing as the city absorbed new residents, and the college's buildings were the landmarks most visitors came to see.
