Cambridge in 1910 counted about 104,000 residents, and the view across its college yard took in a city still deciding how much of it would be industrial and how much academic. Along the Boston and Maine tracks and the river edges, foundries, printing houses, and small manufacturers employed workers who lived in the wooden triple-deckers rising behind Harvard Square. The Harvard Cooperative Society, founded in 1882 to sell books and supplies to students, was one of the square's busiest shops, and its clerks and customers moved through the same crowded sidewalks as streetcar riders heading for Boston. Mount Auburn Cemetery, the rural burial ground laid out in 1831 on the city's western edge, drew Sunday visitors who strolled its hills and monuments.
