In 1919 Harvard was returning to peacetime after the First World War, when its yard had housed Students' Army Training Corps units in 1918 and many undergraduates had left for military service. Men who came back that fall found a campus filling again, and the Class of 1919 was among the first to graduate into a postwar economy. The influenza epidemic of the previous autumn had closed schools and public gatherings across Massachusetts, and wartime rationing of coal and sugar was still fresh in people's memory. In January the states ratified the Eighteenth Amendment, a change that would soon shut the saloons along the streets near Cambridge's factories and workshops.
