Harvard in 1910 was guided by A. Lawrence Lowell, who had become president the year before and would hold the post until 1933. The yard was anchored by Memorial Hall, the Gothic dining hall and tower completed in the 1870s to honor Harvard men who died in the Civil War, and its long hall and bell tower stood out to anyone approaching the college. Commencement each June drew families, alumni, and crowds to the yard, and the autumn football season filled the stands with students and townspeople. Many Cambridge residents saw the university less as a distant institution than as the largest employer, landlord, and neighbor in town, one whose calendar set the rhythm of city life.
