Tufts College on Walnut Hill in Medford, Massachusetts, looked out over a town that was changing fast in 1910. Medford's brickyards along the Mystic River still shipped product to the building boom in Boston and its suburbs, while new houses spread across the hillsides as streetcar lines and railroad service made daily travel to the city easier. The college was still modest in size, and its buildings, lawns, and chapel stood at the edge of a community where many families had come for work in local factories and shops. Across the Boston area, the 1910 census year found growing towns debating paved streets, public schools, and the first automobiles on their roads.
