Tufts College sat on Walnut Hill in Medford, Massachusetts, in 1903, a campus that Universalists had founded in 1852 and named for Charles Tufts, who gave the land. The college was small then, and its students and faculty were closely tied to the Universalist church and to the Boston area that Medford served as a neighbor. Medford itself was a mix of older shipbuilding and brickmaking traditions and a growing residential community, with many residents commuting by rail into Boston along the Boston and Maine lines. Civic life centered on churches, schools, and local government, and the town's identity still reflected its maritime past, when Medford-built clipper ships had sailed the world a half century earlier.
