In 1910, Tufts College on Walnut Hill in Medford, Massachusetts, was a small campus whose newer landmarks included Goddard Chapel, completed in 1904. The Barnum Museum, built in the 1880s with a gift from showman P. T. Barnum, housed natural history collections that drew visitors from across the Boston area. Medford was a city of modest size then, with families moving into new houses on the hillsides and many residents working in Boston and in local shops and yards. Campus life centered on classes, chapel services, and student societies, and the college's hilltop setting gave it a view over the town and the Mystic River valley.
