Wollaston, a village within the city of Quincy on the south shore of Boston, looked out over Quincy Bay in 1910 and was changing from farmland and summer cottages into a commuter neighborhood. Residents depended on the Old Colony Railroad line and on electric streetcars that carried them to Boston offices and to the granite sheds and shoe factories of the wider Quincy area. Wollaston Beach drew crowds on summer weekends, and the shore's hotels and bathhouses were part of local life. Residents of the time would have known the district for its quick rail link to the city and its mix of Yankee families and newer immigrant workers.
