Worcester in 1910 was a city of brick commercial blocks and church spires, with streetcar lines carrying residents from the center to neighborhoods where Swedish, Irish, French Canadian, and Italian families had built their own parishes and shops. Mechanics Hall, completed in 1857 on Main Street, hosted concerts, lectures, and public meetings, and its acoustics were well known across the state. On summer weekends, crowds gathered at Lake Quinsigamond to watch rowing crews, while Elm Park offered shaded walks and open lawns closer to home.
