Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1910 was an industrial city where wire mills, machine shops and loom works drew workers from across New England and from immigrant communities that included Irish, Swedish and French Canadian families. By the 1910 census it had passed 140,000 residents and ranked as the second largest city in the state after Boston. Worcester Memorial Hospital served this crowded population, treating factory injuries and the everyday illnesses of a growing city. Residents also knew Worcester for Clark University, founded in 1887, whose presence gave the city a reputation for learning alongside its manufacturing output. This view shows the hospital grounds at a time when local health care was becoming a point of civic pride.
