In 1910 Worcester, Massachusetts, was one of the largest manufacturing cities in New England, with a population near 150,000 and factories producing wire, looms, machine tools, and abrasives. Washburn and Moen's wire works and the Crompton Loom Works were familiar names to residents, and the Boston and Albany main line and the Providence and Worcester Railroad carried goods and workers through the city. Locals called it the Heart of the Commonwealth, a nickname that reflected its central location between Boston and Springfield. The city also supported Clark University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the College of the Holy Cross, and the Worcester Art Museum, giving its civic life an educated character that set it apart from the smaller mill towns nearby.
