Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1910 was one of New England's largest industrial cities, with about 145,000 residents. Its factories made wire, machine tools, looms, and abrasive grinding wheels, and rail lines and electric trolleys carried workers and goods through the city. Clark University, founded in 1887 by the merchant Jonas Gilman Clark and devoted mainly to graduate study, sat on the west side of the city and was one of the few American universities then focused on research. Residents of the period knew Worcester as a place where manufacturing, immigrant labor, and a growing civic and cultural life existed side by side.
