Wellesley College in Massachusetts, as it looked in 1903, was a women's college about twelve miles west of Boston, set on wooded land around Lake Waban in the town of Wellesley. Founded in 1870 by Henry Durant and his wife Pauline, it had opened its doors in 1875 and by the turn of the century was among the best-known colleges for women in the country. Students and faculty reached the campus by the Boston and Albany rail line, and many families in the region knew the college mainly for its strong programs in the sciences and its observatory. The college was a source of local pride and a steady presence in a town that was still largely residential and rural. This view captures the campus as its neighbors and graduates would have recognized it at the start of the twentieth century.
