In 1903 Wellesley was a small town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, which had separated from Needham in 1881, and the women's college on its western side was by far its largest institution. Students lived in halls scattered along the shore of Lake Waban, where rowing and skating were popular when the water froze. Local farmers and tradesmen supplied the campus with milk, fuel and building materials, and many of the town's shops and boarding houses depended on the student body. Residents of the estates and village centers often had ties to Boston business and commuted in by rail each morning. The campus was still expanding that year, and this view shows it during its early decades of growth.
