Winthrop, Massachusetts, in 1904 was a town of a few thousand people on a peninsula that Boston Harbor tides wrapped around on nearly every side. Electric street cars had replaced many of the older horse-drawn lines across the region during the 1890s, so residents could reach the city more easily, and many men left each morning for jobs in Boston while neighbors ran small shops and trades at home. Across the water, Deer Island and its city institutions were a visible sign of Boston's reach, and the beaches at Revere, just up the shore, drew summer crowds by trolley on weekends. This panoramic view shows a community still shaped by its shoreline, its house lots and its roads, on the edge of a fast-growing metropolitan area.
