In 1907, Springfield was a Connecticut River city of roughly 60,000 people that was turning from its nineteenth-century trades toward the new machine age. Automobile and motorcycle makers were drawing skilled mechanics into town, and the Knox Automobile Company and the Hendee Manufacturing Company, which built Indian motorcycles, were among the firms putting Springfield's name on the road. Electric streetcars carried workers between factories, neighborhoods, and Forest Park, the large public green on the city's outskirts that residents used for picnics, concerts, and summer outings. Those who lived there would have thought of the city as a place where shop floors and downtown offices stood side by side, with the new century's ideas arriving on the same streets as the old.
