Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1909 was a Connecticut River city of brick commercial blocks and church spires, with its downtown centered on Court Square and Main Street. Immigrants from Ireland, Italy, Poland, and French Canada had settled into parish neighborhoods, many of them working in the foundries, mills, and railway car shops that gave the valley its wage jobs. The Wason Manufacturing Company, a long-established builder of railway cars, was one of the older works that set the pace of local employment. Residents would have judged the city by its trades and its churches as much as by its newer factories, since both determined who found steady work and who moved up.
