In 1909, Springfield, Massachusetts, was a Connecticut River city where the Springfield Republican, one of New England's most influential daily papers, shaped local opinion on politics and reform. Streetcars and the Boston and Albany rail lines kept goods and commuters moving through the downtown streets, and the city's older brick commercial blocks stood beside newer office buildings and factories. Across the river and on the grounds of the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School, young men were learning to lead gymnasium classes and athletic programs, and it was there that James Naismith had invented basketball in 1891. Residents would have known the city as a place of commerce, schooling, and civic argument, all packed into a few busy blocks.
