Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1913 was a manufacturing city on the Connecticut River, known across the country for firearms, sporting goods, and games. The federal Springfield Armory had produced military rifles for generations, and nearby firms such as Smith & Wesson and Milton Bradley gave the city a reputation for skilled metalwork and printing. Railroad lines tied the city to Boston, New York, and the Connecticut valley towns, which helped its mills and shops ship goods widely. Residents of the period would have known Springfield as an industrial center whose factory whistles set the rhythm of daily life, with its civic pride tied closely to the work done in its plants.
