In 1913 Perryville was a small county seat in southeastern Missouri, and most of its trade ran through Cape Girardeau, the larger river city to the south. Merchants and hotel keepers served buyers and travelers who arrived by wagon from the hill farms and bottomland around town. Across the state that decade, the automobile was only beginning to reach country roads, and most Perry County families still depended on horses and mules for hauling. A view of the town from that year would show a place whose daily concerns were its roads, its river connections, and the slow arrival of newer machines.
