St. Louis in 1913 was among the largest industrial cities in the United States, with shoe factories, breweries, tobacco works and clothing shops employing thousands, many of them women and immigrants from Germany and Italy. The city had passed 680,000 residents by the 1910 census and was still growing, and its rail yards and streetcar lines moved goods and workers across the region. In 1913 the National Women's Trade Union League held its convention in St. Louis, bringing together organizers and delegates who pressed for shorter hours, higher wages and safer conditions for women in factories and laundries. For local residents, the city was known for brewing and shoemaking, and the convention drew attention to the working lives behind those industries.
