Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, in 1913 was a small river town on the west bank of the Mississippi, one of the oldest European settlements in the Mississippi Valley, founded in the 1700s by French colonists. By then its economy rested on farming in the surrounding limestone bottomlands, along with limestone quarrying, lumber, and river trade, while the town's population remained modest, far smaller than in the booming river cities to the north. The Mississippi was still the town's main highway for freight and passengers, and the railroads that reached the region had not turned it into a major industrial center. Residents of the period were proud of the town's French colonial houses and its old church and burial grounds, which set it apart from the Anglo-American settlements nearby. The town's Catholic heritage, French-speaking families, and riverfront life shaped how locals saw their home.
