Perryville, the seat of Perry County in southeastern Missouri, looked out over a farming and timber region in 1913. Its economy rested on small farms, livestock, and the sawmills and gristmills that processed local timber and grain, while the county's German and French Catholic families had settled the area over the preceding century. Rail lines, including the Iron Mountain route serving the county, gave farmers and merchants their main link to St. Louis and to the wider market. In the early 1910s, the town's residents still organized their lives around the courthouse square, church calendars, and the seasonal rhythm of planting and harvest. A panoramic view from that year would have shown a community that was small, practical, and tied closely to the land around it.
