De Soto, in Jefferson County, Missouri, was in 1913 a town of farmers, merchants, and workers whose fortunes rose and fell with the surrounding fields. Farms on the nearby ridges sent corn, hogs, and dairy goods to market, and local feed stores and produce buyers handled much of the daily trade. The county seat at Hillsboro drew residents for court business and county affairs, while statewide debates over good roads and school funding reached the town's council chambers and kitchen tables. Wagons and mules still shared the street with the first automobiles, and the people here would have measured progress in harvests and new goods rather than in the speed of motor travel.
