De Soto, in Jefferson County, Missouri, was a railroad town in 1913, shaped by the Iron Mountain line that carried iron ore, lead, and timber out of the hills to the south and on toward St. Louis. Its fortunes followed the mining and rail traffic of the region, and many residents worked in the yards, the depot, or the mines and smelters that drew on the same ore. The town sat within reach of the larger city to the north, so its farm families and shopkeepers bought supplies there and sent their produce along the same tracks. Like many small Missouri communities of the period, De Soto was organized around its churches, schools, and lodges, and around the arrival of the train, which was the surest sign of commerce and news.
