St. Louis, Missouri, in 1907 was a river city of roughly 600,000 people, only three years past the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904, whose grounds in Forest Park had drawn millions of visitors. Its economy rested on manufacturing, including shoe factories, tobacco works, breweries such as Anheuser-Busch, and iron and machinery plants, all linked by a dense network of railroads. Warehouses and wholesale houses crowded the downtown and the Mississippi riverfront, shipping goods across the Midwest. The gathering shown here, titled Presidents Day, reflects the patriotic calendar local residents kept, though the exact form of the observance in 1907 is less well documented than the city's commercial life.
