Kansas City's stock yards in 1907 sat at the center of one of the largest livestock trades in the country, where cattle, hogs, and sheep arriving by rail were sorted, penned, and sold before moving on to packing houses. The yards drew on the surrounding plains ranches and farms of Kansas, Missouri, and the Indian Territory, and the nearby packing plants gave the district a steady payroll of stockmen, teamsters, drovers, and meatpacking workers. Kansas City ranked among the leading livestock markets behind Chicago, and its railroads made the town a bustling crossroads for shipments moving east and west. Residents of the time knew the yards as the engine of the city's commerce, with its smoke, noise, and cattle drives shaping daily life.
