Kansas City, Missouri, in 1907 was a commercial city of roughly a quarter million people, having passed 160,000 at the 1900 census. Its downtown was built around wholesale jobbing houses that sold dry goods, hardware, and groceries to merchants across the Southwest, and the rail lines that fed them ran in from every direction. The autumn financial panic of 1907 pinched local banks and credit, and businesses that depended on borrowing felt the squeeze through the winter. Residents who looked out over the downtown rooftops would have seen the mix of office blocks, hotel towers, and church spires that marked a city confident it would outgrow its river origins.
