Kansas City, Missouri, in 1909 was a rail and livestock center that had grown to roughly a quarter of a million people by the 1910 census. Its fortunes rested on meatpacking, grain and flour milling, and freight moving over the many lines that converged on the city along the Missouri River. From the residential heights south of downtown, along Gillham Road, residents could look north over the business district and the river bottoms where the warehouses, rail yards, and factories stood. The city's leaders were then investing in a system of parks and boulevards, and the growing neighborhoods on the high ground to the south showed how quickly the city was spreading beyond its old core.
